The English of Bring Me The Horizon are preparing to release a new album this Friday, September 11, 2015. That’s The Spirit is a new step for the group, which decided to lower all barriers of genres and venturing on land unknown. With their previous album, Sempiternal, Bring Me The Horizon had first made a place in prime time on radio. Since then the band has matured, gained confidence, and wanted to transform this test. This satisfaction is reflected in That’s The Spirit, which marks a sort of “renaissance” of the musicians of Sheffield. Big changes are expected; we discussed this new stage with Matt Kean, bassist.

Alternativ News: There are only a few days before the release of That’s The Spirit … How do you feel when approaching the big day?
Matt Kean: I am very nervous, and we’re all super excited that everyone can listen now, because our side it’s a moment that is happening in the loop!

“Drown” is the first single from the album to have been released, there are almost a year. Did you wrote that song before knowing exactly which direction you were going to take with this new album?
Yes ! Basically, we had written “Drown” independently, without imagining it part of an album. Then when we started writingThat’s The Spirit and selecting the pieces, it was found that “Drown” corresponded to the rest of the disc, both in music than words. So we decided to record it again to integrate the album.

In an interview, Jordan [Fish] said that it is this song that made you realize that you could be more than “just” a metalcore band. Do so that was your goal when planning That’s The Spirit? Reach a wider audience?
No, anyway lyrically we did as we have always done, particularly without trying to please; we simply expressed the emotions that we felt at that time. Then we wanted to have catchy choruses, unifying. But that too is what we’ve always tried to do.

Do you think that to go into the studio on the island of Santorini, Greece, some things changed?
It was the first time we recorded there, but I do not think it has had an impact … When you write something, Jordan is behind his computer, and directly recorded. So before you even get to Santorini, we already had a demo version of the album. The biggest was ready. All we had to do was to re-record everything, with better sound, but being there in the studio rather than in England had no influence on the Content of the album.
But then again we might be in a different state of mind at the time of writing. We had just met large success Sempiternal, we just had to Wembley, everyone was fit and flourished, probably more than before. This is what has most influenced the tone ofThat’s The Spirit.

Besides, do you tell us a few words about your concert at Wembley?
It was extraordinary. It’s hard to put words on it is still fuzzy in my head! But it was clearly one of the highlights of our career.

It seems that with this new album, you want to “hit” as strong as with the previous ones, but with much less screams or breakdowns … Does this album was kind of a challenge for you?
Yes, somehow. The best albums we have always trying to create, and this one, we wanted the foundation to do something really “heavy” and after two or three days to write, it was realized that everything we had, it was really bad, it sounded fake, as if forced … In parallel, we had six or seven drafts of songs that hold water and we decided to deepen, to rework. So we continued to write without putting barriers, and that’s how we got in this result there.

How would you describe this album? What is this “spirit” [Spirit] in question?
This album is sarcastic, like leaves perfectly reflected “Happy Song” - which is why we chose to use the title as a first single, because in our opinion it was the most representative taste the rest of the disc. Everyone pretends that all is well, ignoring the problems around them. But still, there are things that go into a spin, and rather than ignore it would be better to take what’s positive it there. So it is this spirit that we want to highlight a conscious mind of all the bad things that happen on Earth but which seeks to get up, to move forward.

In your opinion, how the fans of Bring Me The Horizon will they accommodate the album?
I do not know really … I think those who only listen to metal and are sealed to other genres will be a little disappointed. But on the other hand, I believe that more and more people nowadays are more open and appreciate different musical genres. People who have a relatively wide range of tastes will understand that direction and will, I hope, appreciate the album. But actually, those who do not like metal does not necessarily find them and will be disoriented!

What do you think people are sort of rage against the group because music moves away from its “original” of Bring Me The Horizon?
It disturbs me a bit, because we have always changed … I mean, none of our albums was unlike the previous! On several occasions, people came to tell me, “Oh, it’s a shame that it no longer resembles the old CD,” and I have to ask, “Which one?"Because each album is different, this is what we have always done. It has evolved between each of our album, and if people expect that so something that looks like Count Your Blessings, I want to ask them, "Where were you during the past decade ?Because we have evolved in the meantime! ”

Some were already surprised by Sempiternal but That’s The Spirit is clearly a new step for the group - there is even a saxophone solo on it! Do Sempiternal served as a springboard for this new album, this new sound?
I guess yes. As I write Sempiternal, we were already in a very positive frame of mind, one found that the result was pretty cool. And once this album came out, we had a lot of enthusiastic feedback, which has given us confidence in ourselves and in our music - because precisely the fact that we constantly changing, which explores new horizons , it gave us a feeling of instability, permanent doubt. So we decided to follow our instinct, our moods and desires. It is clearly the result of earned insurance Sempiternal which led us to That’s The Spirit.

What do you think today listening to the old BMTH EPs and albums?
Hmm … It’s like when you look at pictures of you when you were in high school, you know the kind? When you say to yourself, “But what I had in mind? "Well that’s about it! But it’s pretty funny, we’re all relatively proud of what we have done from the beginning, because that’s what brought us here today. When we wrote Count Your Blessings, we had 17-18 years. There are not many bands that write an album that age.

Are there a song of the group of all time, that you love more than others?
In all albums, including the new? Uh … I think right now, my favorite is "Avalanche”. Another I like is “Do not Go” or “Oh No” onThat’s The Spirit. In general, I like the songs that move away a little from the register in which one would expect Bring Me The Horizon!

And is there a song you got bored? Or that you’re ashamed?
I’m a little sick of “Chelsea Smile” because we always play for the super long. This piece is a must for fans, they await in each of our sets. I think it would be cool to change sometimes, interpret another of our old songs. For cons, I do not know if it would please those who want absolutely between one! But the play every night, without exception, for almost eight years … Me, I wish I could play other. But again, primarily playing for people who come to us, so it is their pleasure to do before thinking about us.
As for the songs that I would be ashamed … No, there is none, I take everything we have done since the beginning!

There are years, Oli had said in an interview Linkin Park was one of your main influences. With That’s The Spirit, more and more people compare you to them, saying for example, “The new album Bring Me The Horizon will have an impact in the global culture similar to that which had been Hybrid Theory in 2001”. What do you think of all this?
I guess we will have the answer to this assumption rather quickly! Anyway, it’s a huge compliment, it’s amazing that anyone would think that. We will see in the coming weeks. But we’ve always tried to change, to evolve, we never wanted to settle for something simple. After Suicide Season, we could very well keep the momentum going, to write non-stop albums, but artistically, this would not bring us satisfaction. From our side, we try to write the best albums, and what follows, it depends on people’s opinions. So we’ll see what they think of this record!

You also have a new logo, this umbrella that appears around the last few weeks … What does it mean?
It was the idea of Oli and I think this is a perfect symbol for the album. It is a kind of metaphor. When it rains, the umbrella shield serves you, but sometimes some drops may still pass. And in life, even if you blinds you, you are looking to protect you, things or people outside can still reach reach you.

There was controversy on the Internet over this logo; another group - The Caulfiled Cult, Singapore - uses a similar symbol since 2011, and they screamed plagiarism … But if I remember correctly, a design that resembled the logo already appeared on a t-shirt Drop Dead [ the brand created by Oliver Sykes] in 2006-2007?
Yes, right! It has also made the connection, Oli had it in mind for a moment. I did not even know, for this other group … But in England, the umbrella is a very popular symbol, because it rains all the time!

You’ve already posted a few videos (clips and live) for pieces of That’s The Spirit. Do others are planned?
Yes, I think we’ll shoot a video for “True Friends” in about two weeks. It will be next on the list.

The video for “Throne” is clearly inspired by the series Game Of Thrones. Do you look at all the series?
Yes Yes ! On tour, we all come to watch the latest episodes together. It’s funny that you mention it to me now; A few days ago, we played in Reading, and the actor who plays Samwell Tarly in the series was at the festival. Our girlfriends crossed, they all wanted pictures with him!

In the series, in which house you would belong?
Mh … I’d like to be a Targaryen!

And what is your favorite character?
Tyrion, the dwarf. I find it really funny, and I like his cheeky side.

[SPOILER ALERT ;-)] You saw the end of season 5, then? What do you think will happen to Jon Snow in Season 6?
I think he will be brought back from the dead by Mélisandre, the priestess. I read the books too; at first I was not very interested in fantasy and everything. But after watching the first season of the series, I needed more, I really immersed myself in this universe and I read the books after each other in the space of two months!

Returning to music: you’ll start touring next month with great bands like PVRIS, Issues, Neck Deep and Beartooth … Who are you most excited to see on stage?
PVRIS because I never had the chance to see them live. We played with them last weekend in Reading and Leeds, but I could not free myself to go watch their show. And when they were on tour, it was also, so I could never go to their concert. But I love their music, and I can not wait to go on tour with them!

At the announcement of your European tour, many French fans were disappointed that no date was planned in the country. But you and Jordan have said on Twitter that you prepare something special for us, can you tell us what that is?
Yes, we will return to Paris in April 2016! [The date of April 16, 2016 at Trianon was officially communicated a few hours after this interview] We really tried to plan a show here at the same time as the other dates, but the rooms are all crowded in November, he n ’ there was no room for us. I think the only room that was available was the Bataclan, but two years ago we had a sold-out show there, suddenly we hoped to find another room, largest, where more people could come see us.

You spoke festivals Reading and Leeds just now … Everything went well?
It was great! I was really nervous because we had not played “great” concert from Wembley in December. So it was a kind of return, after eight months. We were all afraid to be a little rusty! In addition to that, we had a hell of pressure because people behind us were saying: “We must ensure is a unique opportunity to seduce your audience!”

And indeed, how did the audience react to the new songs?
I think most appreciated! There must be a lot of people who came to see us when they were not fans before - and on the other hand, as I said earlier, metal fans had bitching because “ it was not enough metal ”! But hey, if you do not like them, they can still continue to listen to our old albums!

Let’s talk about food now: you are several in the group to be vegans, right?
Oli, Jordan and I are, but not Matt or Lee and even if they eat vegan with us as often as possible. From my side, I became a vegan when I was eighteen. I was raised in a family that ate quite “normally”, then one day I was at a concert in Britain, and there was a vegan food stand. I started talking to the guy who took the stand, he told me about these convictions, and this is where I wanted to stop eating meat.

I saw you, Jordan and you, come up with East Side Burgers restaurant sachets, so you already know at least one spot in Paris where you can find vegan food?
Yes ! It two years ago, when we were playing at the Bataclan, I went for a walk in the area and I stumbled across this restaurant.I said, “What? So close to the room, there is a vegan restaurant? ”. I had no idea it was a fluke! So, I went searching Oli and others, and were returned to East Side Burgers. It’s really super good, and came back today I thought we could not go back to Paris again without a ride!

What do you think, in general, France and the French?
I love the France! I lived in Montreal for two years, so I’m doing a little bit when I need to speak French. I understand quite well, even though I find it a bit difficult to speak, and especially writing. But I can follow a conversation, I can read menus and not too long texts, so it’s quite fun for me to be here, it reminds me of when I lived in Montreal! Although there it was easier for me, because people speak some the “franglais” they switchent constantly from one language to another. As for the French … Exactly, I once came up with a Quebec friend, she spoke French with a guy and he retorted: “You do not say it like that! "I think the French are a bit harsh when it comes to their language! But otherwise, I love it here, and we love our French fans, they are always highly reactive, very enthusiastic. We all look forward to returning!
